Session Goals

To identify ways of improving your personal effectiveness by developing a better understanding of others and of yourself.

Through detailed consideration of what you think of others and why, you will gain new insights into who you are. You are also likely to develop a clearer understanding of who you want to be. Once you have identified possible areas for self-improvement, you can choose to change and become more effective in the way you work, both on your own and with others.

What we did

  • Speed networking - each attendee met 5 people and asked each person 3 questions in 5 minutes
  • Introduction to recommended self-improvement tools
  • Re-telling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Kanban Game
  • More details on self-improvement tools
  • Building teams using Belbin and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves characters
  • Session retrospective

Session retrospective

What went well

  • Open, friendly environment
  • Enjoyable storytelling
  • Useful combination of reflection and introspection; thought-provoking
  • Good explanation of the attributes of each story character for the game
  • Exercises were fun and engaging
  • Good use of the Snow White metaphor throughout the session
  • Ice breaker exercise was a good way to meet people at the start of the conference
  • Excellent snacks
  • Nice materials
  • The bell - for moving from exercise to exercise
  • Learnt how to deal with negative characteristics in individuals
  • Got a good understanding into team dynamics
  • Good presentation
  • Very well-planned

What went wrong

  • Mentioned lots of tools that weren't covered in greater detail
  • Tools were covered at too high a level
  • Make purpose of game more explicit (ie to improve personal insights and relationship with others)
  • Missing table of techniques and when you might use them
  • Pacing a bit slow
  • Not sure how to map myself to a fairytale character
  • Slide material too dense
  • Felt like two presentations instead of a paired-session
  • Unclear distinction that Myers-Briggs and Belbin are indications of preferences not definitive (unchangeable) types

Puzzles

  • Why not run as a long Sunday session to cover tools in greater detail?
  • Not sure fairytale characters map to real people properly?
  • How do we get others to change their behaviour?
  • I still don't know how to approach my Bashful dwarf

Suggestions

  • Cover 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • Provide list of techniques and suggestions on when to use them
  • More stories from presenters on their experience and application of tools

What happened next?

  • Pascal, Portia and Charles Weir helped organise a B-o-F to cover TeamworkTechniques as a followup on the session
