Colin is Emeritus Professor of Software Practice, in the School of Computing Science at Middlesex University, located on the University's Hendon campus.

His research interests span the domains of software engineering and information systems, including: software processes (their definition, management and improvement); capability maturity models; standards and benchmarks for software quality and processes; influences of organisational cultures on software development; causes of success and failure in software projects; software methods and life cycles; method and tool integration; software and systems engineering environments; software metrics and econometrics; software reuse and product line practice; systems engineering; and software engineering education.

He is very active at present as a member of "NHS23", a group of UK academics who are committed to achieving a review of the NHS National Programme for IT (NPfIT). NPfIT is the world's largest civilian IT programme, with likely costs ranging between £20 billion and £30 billion over ten years. While it is very hard to get reliable information about the programme, which is shrouded within a culture of fear and "commercial confidentiality", all the externally visible signs indicate the probability of a serious degree of failure and public waste.
