SPA Conference session: Smalltalk Tutorial | |||
| One-line description: | An Introduction to Smalltalk | ||
| Session format: | Long tutorial (330 mins) [read about the different session types] | ||
| Abstract: | I gave a Sunday tutorial last year, and this would be a "continuation" of last year's event. During the session, attendees will be introduced to: -- Smalltalk Syntax -- Smalltalk libraries -- Smalltalk Development Tools The goal of the session will be to create a small, working application by the end of the day. We will be using Seaside (an open source Smalltalk web framework) to build a simple application. | ||
| Audience background: | Software Development experience would be helpful, but no previous Smalltalk exertise will be required. | ||
| Benefits of participating: | Attendees will learn Smaltalk, the first OO language system developed - this knowledge will help them in their usage of OO techniques regadless of what language and tools they use regularly. Additionally, they will be exposed to Seaside, which takes a different tack at developing web applications - it should be a horizon expanding experience. | ||
| Materials provided: | Cincom Smalltalk non-commercial CD's with all required software. Attendees will be able to download the materials from the Cincom website before the conference as well. | ||
| Process: | The session will proceed as a series of group exercises, with small amounts of lecture to tie things together. As with last year's session, the goal will be to highlight actual work with the tools. | ||
| Detailed timetable: | I intend to start with a basic overview of the language, and then proceed to exercises. Along the way, we will have small (less than 20 minutes) periods of lecture to introduce and explain various aspects of the tools, libraries, and language | ||
| Outputs: | The outputs will be the application and a web page summary | ||
| History: | I gave a tutorial at SPA 2007 on Smalltalk | ||
