SPA Conference session: A Toolkit for Enhancing Learning

Abstract:For software practitioners and others learning new "stuff" is a fundamental part of their jobs whether it be new software, processes or business techniques. Knowing how to improve the way you learn can, however, be hard. This workshop aims to help you optimise the ways in which you learn and discover new tools for learning.

The workshop will include material on:

- understanding personal preferences e.g. Myers-Briggs, Belbin, Kolb and the Kiersey Temperament inventories

- how people learn including surface, deep & strategic approaches, the experiential learning cycle and multiple intelligences

- a range of tools and techniques for learning including: visualisation, mindmaps, memorisation techniques, co-operative learning, effective speed-reading, the art of precis, physical involvement, the importance of place.
 
Audience background:This session will appeal to anyone with a desire to improve or change the way they (or others) learn. In addition it will be of use to anyone who oftern needs to learn new things (software, processes etc).
 
Benefits of participating:An improved understanding of how your preferences and strengths can be harnessed when learning together with an ability to use a range of tools and techniques in your learning.
 
Materials provided:Handouts on the topics covered together with a bibliography of books and websites where people can find out more.
 
Process:A mixture of group work, self-reflection and exercises together with some short presentations.
