Abstract
Suitable quantitative information about project status is invaluable for project management, developer motivation and process improvement. However, many traditional metrics programmes struggle to get project staff to gather any numbers, what numbers are gathered are often of dubious utility, and are misinterpreted and abused.

A development team using Extreme Programming gathers accurate, useful quantitative data without significant overhead, and uses these data to aid clear, effective decision making.

This session will explore some failure modes of traditional metrics, the lack of relevance of some traditional measures on an XP project (eg test coverage, lines of code) and the nature of the numbers that an XP team gathers. Using real numbers from real XP projects, the session will explore how developers and managers may benefit from this feature of XP.

Audience
Developers and managers of development wishing to gain a new persepective on metrics and XP
Benefits
  • An understanding of the use of metrics generally, and in Extreme Programming projects in particular

Materials
Historical data from real XP projects, with interpretation and illustrations of their use.

Team Optimization
I work for Team Optimization[http://TeamOptimization.com] in England, where I help clients to "get Agile".

I started doing OOP in 1993, using Smalltalk for my MSc. In 1996 I finished my PhD?? about automated refactoring in Self (which like Smalltalk, only more so). In 1999 I was introducted to eXtreme Programming and have been involved with many of the XP conferences and presented papers and talks about XP.

I first went to OT in 2000 - and thought it was great!
